Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Treatment

The physicians at Pedes Orange County are proud to use prostate artery embolization (PAE) to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate. Although BPH isn’t necessarily a life-threatening condition on its own, we are empathetic to the impact it can have on our patients’ quality of life. PAE is a cutting-edge procedure that differs from traditional BPH procedures, as it offers high success rates without negatively impacting sexual health.

PAE works by blocking the blood flow to the affected area, causing the prostate cells to cease function and die. Over time, the immune system aids in reabsorbing these dead tissues, effectively reducing the prostate size by about 20 to 40% over six months. This process significantly improves urinary flow and alleviates pressure that causes urinal blockage, providing a non-invasive solution for BPH sufferers.

Your physician will begin your PAE procedure by making a small incision in the groin, through which they will insert a catheter into the artery that feeds your prostate. Your vascular surgeon will then inject a solution comprising thousands of tiny plastic beads. These beads obstruct the artery, disrupting the blood supply to the prostate in a procedure known as embolization. Depending on the artery’s position and size, the procedure can take from one to four hours.

PAE holds numerous advantages over traditional surgery, including minimal recovery time and no need for an extended hospital stay. With the comfortable use of IV medications, patients can expect to be discharged shortly after the procedure. PAE is a safe and highly effective alternative for patients who are unable to undergo specific surgeries due to underlying health conditions. PAE also carries a lower risk of sexual complications compared to traditional surgical treatments.

Varicoceles Treatment

While most men with varicoceles won’t face fertility problems, the condition can cause pain, testicular atrophy, or infertility. Varicoceles treatment offered at Pedes Orange County, called percutaneous embolization or varicocele embolization, can help by sealing off affected veins and improving the sperm quality and count.

Varicocele embolization is a minimally invasive procedure through which tiny coils, or a special balloon is inserted into the affected veins to block blood flow to the varicocele, reducing pressure and alleviating symptoms. This outpatient procedure offers a quick recovery time and minimizes the risk of

complications, providing an effective alternative to surgical treatment.

Catheter-directed embolization is an outpatient procedure led by an interventional radiologist that does not require surgery. Your vascular surgeon will use local anesthesia and a thin catheter to redirect blood flow from the testicular vein to healthier veins, effectively “shutting off” the problematic vein. This is done through the injection of a contrast dye for clear vein visualization and the use of coils or balloons to block the vein. The pain-free procedure lasts approximately two hours, ensuring patient comfort

throughout.

Varicocele embolization offers significant benefits over surgical ligation, primarily due to its minimally invasive nature. Embolization requires only a small catheter insertion, reducing the risk of infection and allowing for a quicker recovery compared to traditional surgery. Moreover, patients typically experience less post-procedural pain and can return to normal activities sooner. Catheter-directed varicocele embolization has been proven to be as effective as surgical ligation and increases sperm concentration.

Thrombectomy

In most cases, patients who are given a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) will have a treatment regimen of anticoagulants, blood thinners, and the use of compression stockings prescribed to them in efforts to encourage the natural healing of their bodies.

The prescription of blood thinners and anticoagulants will keep blood clots from increasing in size or shifting into the patient’s heart or lungs but will not in themselves eliminate the clots or ensure that clots do not form in the future. The solution our specialists offer clients in these instances is the option of removing the DVT-affected vessels through a procedure known as a Mechanical Thrombectomy.

Thrombolytic Therapy or Thrombolysis

Another procedure that is very similar to thrombectomy is thrombolysis.  This is where our vascular specialists will use a combination of a thrombolytic agent is injected to the nearest access or blockage site.  The agent will reside within the affected area until the blood clot is broken down.  Click here to learn more about thrombolytic therapy/thrombolysis treatment.
